Coal mining companies in Poland are significantly affected by the recent drop in coal prices and rise in production costs.
Polish Minister in charge of restructuring the industry Wojciech Kowalczyk told news agency PAP: "We declared that we will submit the notification application on the aid programme in February."
The government estimated restructuring costs for four most troubled mines at $624m, and expects the value to increase by up to 20% on reaching a deal with the unions.
Last month, the government planned to cease operations at Kompania Weglowa’s four mines but it dropped the plans after protests from the miners, Reuters reported.
As part of the plan, Kompania Weglowa’s remaining ten mines will be managed by a new entity called New Kompania Weglowa, which operates under the supervision of Weglokoks.
Kompania Weglowa recorded loss of $309.3m for the first eleven months of 2014 with liabilities of around $1.09bn, according to government data.
