Valued at a combined $2.7bn, the contracts covers six new combined-cycle power plants, which will add over 8GW of electricity to help increase Algeria’s generating capacity by 70%, two fast-track projects that add 528MW for this summer’s peak demand, and a new simple-cycle power plant to add 370MW to Algeria’s electricity grid.

GE Power & Water president and CEO Steve Bolze said the contracts demonstrate the company’s capability to supply proven technology that can address both the immediate need for more power and the long-term energy requirements of a growing economy.

”In addition, the new GE-Sonelgaz industrial cooperation is further evidence that we are invested in the future of Algeria’s energy infrastructure,” Bolze added.

SPE CEO Nabil Kafi said, ”This contract is an important step in realizing Sonelgaz’s strategy which involves the implementation of a series of industrial partnerships predicated on the use of local resources.”

Under the first $1.9bn contract, the company will supply its 9F 3-series gas turbines and services to SPE Spa for installation in six new combined-cycle power plants, which will commence simple-cycle duty in 2015 and combined-cycle operation in 2017.

As part of second contract, the company has already supplied its advanced aeroderivative gas turbines six month prior to original schedule to help Algeria in meeting its 2013 summer peak electricity demand.

The third $150m contract seeks delivery of power generation equipment for the Hassi R’mel simple-cycle gas turbine plant.
