The project is comprised of 82MWp Solar Frontier and 61MWp First Solar PV modules, which will generate enough electricity to power around 35,000 homes and offset around 250,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually.
EDF Renewable Services is providing the long-term operations and maintenance services for the project, which is claimed to be the world’s eighth largest PV plant.
Construction on the project, which features over 1.1 million solar PV panels in Mojave Desert, was started in May 2012 and was completed in August 2013.
San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) is purchasing the entire output from the project under a 25-year contract that will help SDG&E to meet California’s renewable portfolio standard of sourcing 33% of retail electricity from renewable energy resources by 2020.
EDF Renewable Energy’s West Region director of solar development Javier De La Garza said that the project has significantly contributed to the Kern County economy including creating up to 500 construction jobs.
