The move, which comes as part of the ongoing adjustment of its global production capacity, would affect 120 employees at the factory, including management, and the company is likely to begin negotiations with the employee unions and authorities.
The company, which continues to reduce assets to return to profitability, is adapting to a slow-down in the wind power market in 2013 and expects slow growth in upcoming years.
Vestas COO Jean-Marc Lechene said that the company plans to close the Taranto factory in order to remain competitive, matching its global manufacturing organization with the market conditions.
"This is a further step in keeping our production facilities running as close to full capacity as possible, which is necessary to support improvements in Vestas’ profitability and the ability to deliver competitive products to our customers," added Lechene.
