The company, in late 2011, has purchased the Kevin’s Corner project in Queensland from Hancock Prospecting as well as a 79% stake in the Alpha coal and Alpha West coal projects located in the Galilee Basin.

The Kevin’s Corner project, when combined with GVK’s two Alpha coal projects will create one of the largest coal mining operations in the world.

The new approval, granted under The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC), will allow GVK to construct and operate the Kevin’s Corner coal mine 50km north of the town of Alpha in Queensland.

The Kevin’s Corner project has a production capacity of up to 30 million tons per annum of export quality thermal coal with a mine life in excess of 30 years.

GVK Power & Infrastructure founder chairman and managing director Dr. GVK Reddy said the approval strengthens GVK’s aim to provide world-class infrastructure projects in a timely and responsible manner.

"This approval comes as a major milestone towards our goal of becoming the premier and most reliable coal supplier to the world thus enabling better lives.

Construction of the Kevin’s Corner project is due to commence in 2015 while the first coal is scheduled to produce in 2018.
