Around 247 miners were in the mine when water rushed into the shaft, out of which 223 miners were able to get safely to the surface.
According to Chinese Central Television, more than 600 rescue workers drilled holes and pumped water from the surface in hopes to reaching the trapped miners.
Chinese state owned coal-mining company Datong Coal Mine Group owns the Jiangjiawan coalmine, which reportedly has production capacity of 900,000 tonnes.
The Standard reported that initial investigations suggest that the flooding was caused by accumulated water in a mined-out area of the colliery.
According to reports, the number of deaths in some of China’s dangerous mines has reduced due to the improvement in safety technology, and fall in demand of coal in the country.
