The station, which was constructed by the Amman Asia Electric Power Company, will provide about 15 percent of the power supply to the current capacity of the electric network.
The 573MW station is the largest diesel-fired power generation project in the world and was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records.
The prime minister said the project is part of the Kingdom’s efforts to achieve sustainable economic growth, boost energy security and develop the energy sector infrastructure.
The project, he added, is an important element in the national energy strategy which aims at meeting a growing demand for electricity and increasing electric power capacity. The venture prepares and expands the national electrical grid for additional loads in the future.
Ensour said that the opening of the plant is an example of Jordan’s progress towards achieving energy security and sends a clear message to our partners in the development drive that the government is capable of accomplishing its energy goals.
The project was established by the Amman Asia Electric Power Company which is a coalition comprising the Korean company KEPCO, Japan’s Mitsubishi, and the Finnish Loire Tsila, in addition to local teams from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the National Electric Power Company, and the Water Authority of Jordan.
