Sources familiar with the matter were cited by Press Trust of India as saying that the Indian government evinced private sector partnerships as various companies in the country intend to invest in Bangladesh power sector.
Bangladesh power secretary Monowar Islam said: "We have discussed about the Indian companies interests to invest in our power sector alongside the issues of importing power from Nepal and Bhutan through India."
The plans were announced during the Joint Steering Committee meeting on the power sector held between the allied nations.
Bangladesh Energy Ministry spokesman said: "We are already engaged in the government level (cooperation in powers sector) and now the two countries agreed to allow private sector partnership in this sector."
India agreed to evaluate regulatory measures that will allow Bangladesh to import hydropower from Nepal and Bhutan.
The meeting also discussed on import of additional 600MW power by Bangladesh from India, and the multi-terminal HVDC bi-pole transmission line from the proposed 1,320MW Rampal plant near Sundarbans to India’s north and north-eastern region.
