The consortium is expected to mine and process coal on blocks A and B in Mui basin, which is further sub-divided into four blocks,A, B, C and D.

Kenya Ministry of Energy and Petroleum said in a statement, "The consortium will now be invited for negotiations with the ministry as per the tender requirements on the basis of their responsiveness in the technical and financial proposals they submitted."

Liketh Investments Kenya and HCIG Energy Investment consortium was selected out of three proposals who had submitted technically successful bids.

The consortium beat out competition from Transcentury Investments Continental Oil and Power Machines consortium and a consortium of the China Northeast Electric Power Engineering and China Coal Technology.

The concession agreement allows for exploration, evaluation, extraction, development, production, processing, storage and disposal of coal and coal bed methane from the blocks.

Under the deal, the consortium will also build a coal-fired power plant which will use coal extracted from the blocks.
