Planned to be constructed off the Dorset and Hampshire coast, the project is being developed by Navitus Bay Development, a 50-50 joint venture between EDF Energy and Eneco.

MHI will supply a maximum of 121 V164-8MW wind turbines for the project, which has a mitigation option of 630MW capacity using a maximum of 78 turbines.

The contract is expected to be worth around £1.6bn for 970MW or £1.1bn for 630MW, Bloomberg reported.

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind CEO Jens Tommerup said: "If the project translates into a firm and unconditional order, the 80m blades are planned to be produced locally at our manufacturing facility on the Isle of Wight, providing jobs in the region close to the project."

MHI Vestas is a joint venture company established by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Vestas Wind Systems.

Once operational by 2021, the project is expected to generate clean, sustainable electricity required to power around 700,000 UK households.

During construction, the project is estimated to create about 1,700 jobs and 140 permanent jobs annually over 25 years of the project’s operational life.
