The Candelaria mine is located in Copiapó, 650km north of the city of Santiago, in the Atacama region. It is an open pit and underground mine that provides copper ore to a concentrator located on-site, with a capacity of 75,000 tons per day.

ZÜBLIN Chile has been involved in the work since the beginning of 2005 and the extension to the contract involves 22,400m of horizontal developments, adding to the 1,771,000tn of loading and transport of material, among other works.

With the present extension, ZÜBLIN is expected to oversee at total of 58,400m of horizontal developments.

STRABAG CEO Thomas Birtel said: “We have been working in Mina Candelaria for 14 years and have optimised the resources and processes in each of the projects in which we have taken part. The extension of the contract with Mina Candelaria Subterránea is proof of this and makes us proud.

“We owe our success mainly to the work of our local team, who fulfilled its commitments in a responsible and professional manner.”

In March 2018, STRABAG secured a contract from Sirius Minerals to build an approximately 13km tunnel section for the underground transport system of the Woodsmith Mine near Whitby, England. The Woodsmith mine is expected to begin extraction from the polyhalite deposit in 2021.

Under the contract, STRABAG will construct a section of a 37km tunnel with a diameter of 4.7 m for an environmentally friendly conveyor system to transport the mined polyhalite to Wilton for processing. The contract also includes the construction of a tunnel ramp as well as the tunnel portal at Wilton.
