The cable system will be delivered by NKT for Hornsea 2 will comprise three far-shore cables, constituting nearly 50% of the entire project.

The Hornsea 2 wind farm, with a capacity of 1.4GW, will supply clean electricity to over 1.3 million UK households once it is operational in 2022. It will be located 89km off the coast of Yorkshore, close to Hornsea 1 wind farm, where NKT has delivered the entire cable system.

NKT’s cable contract is worth €145m and corresponds to about €110m in standard metal prices, the company said.

The export cables for Hornsea 2 will be manufactured in Karlskrona, Sweden. Production is expected to begin in this year’s autumn.

NKT president and CEO Michael Hedegaard Lyng says: “This cable contract for Hornsea 2 not only emphasizes that we provide leading and proven technology. It also states that our long-time customers such as Ørsted value our expertise, knowhow and continued dialogue to find the optimum solution for both parties.

“The offshore wind market continues to hold attractive prospects for us in the coming years, and our ability to offer turnkey solutions from cable design to installation and service is a prerequisite to stay in the forefront of customer demands.”

The Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm is owned by Ørsted.

This wind farm will be powered by 165 of Siemens Gamesa’s SG8.0-167 DD turbines, each with a power generating capacity of 8MW. The wind farm will be spread across in an area of 462km2.

It is expected to offset nearly 2 million tonnes of CO2 and 46,000 tonnes of SO2 emissions per year.
