Russian President Vladimir Putin has conducted a meeting with head of Gazprom Aleksey Miller to get an update on the progress on the project.
After the meeting, Putin said that the work has started on the South Stream and has asked Miller to commence work on the Yamal-Europe 2 project.
The project is important in "improving reliability of gas supplies to Poland, Slovakia and Hungary," Putin added.
Miller said that the project will have a maximum capacity to store about 15 billion cubic meters, which is expected to be completed by 2018-2019.
Yamal-Europe 1 pipeline is currently the effective gas route in economic terms, as it belongs to Gazprom’s transit system in many countries, while the capacity of Yamal-Europe 1 pipeline is about 33 billion cubic meters.
Gazprom plans to build alternative routes around Ukraine, as a result of gas war between Russia and Ukraine, reported RT.
The two possible alternatives include the construction of the Nord Stream, which will cost about $6bn, along the Baltic Sea and the construction of the second thread of the Yamal-Europe pipeline.
