An 8 MW solar power plant is under development by Xcel Energy in south central Colorado which is claimed to be both the largest concentrating photovoltaic and flat-plate solar panel photovoltaic power plant in the US.

Xcel affiliate SunEdison is to build, own and operate the plant which will use the two solar technologies with approximately 1.2MW coming from concentrating photovoltaic units and the remainder from flat-plate solar panel units.

The plant is expected to be on line by the end of 2007. Public Service Company of Colorado will purchase the power and the Renewable Energy Credits associated with the plant.

Concentrating PV units direct intense sunlight into a beam which is then focused on a highly efficient PV cell.
