The Wylfa nuclear power plant in North Wales, UK, has received permission to continue generating electricity for up to two years beyond December 2010.

The UK government’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) owns the plant and EnergySolutions subsidiary Magnox North is its operator.

The plant, which started operation in 1971, was due to cease generation in December 2010 but will now continue until 2012.

The extra generation is expected to bring additional revenue in excess of £100m for NDA, and EnergySolutions will continue to earn fees as a result of the extended generation.

EnergySolutions offers integrated services and solutions, including nuclear operations, characterization, decommissioning, decontamination, nuclear materials management, recycling and disposition of nuclear waste, and research and engineering services across the nuclear fuel cycle.
