WPPI Energy will purchase the energy the solar panels produce, which is equivalent to the energy used by 150 average-sized Wisconsin homes each year.
The not-for-profit company supplies power to Jefferson Utilities and 50 other locally owned utilities in Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa.
The project represents an economic development opportunity for the city of about 8,000 in southeastern Wisconsin. Half Moon Ventures of Chicago developed and owns Jefferson Solar and has signed a 20-year lease on the city-owned, seven-acre site.
The solar field is the first stand-alone, utility-scale solar energy project in Wisconsin.
WPPI Energy supplies 14% of its power from renewable resources.
