Reuters cited SYNAMIN union spokesperson Moussa Moutari as saying that 90% of the 1 000 workers at the mine near the northern town of Arlit were observing the strike.
Moutari added "Output is practically paralysed.
"Somair does not want to pay out bonuses related to financial targets reached in 2014. They are saying they are recording losses, which isn’t true."
Last year, Areva reportedly agreed to a rise in royalty rates a reduction in tax breaks at its uranium mines in Niger, which marked the end to two years of negotiations with the government over an extension to its production agreement, the agency added.
According to an industry source, Niger was one of the major uranium supplier to France’s nuclear reactors in 2013, supplying one fifth of the requirement of the reactors.
However, the figure should decline to around 10% this year as Areva and EDF diversify supplies.
