Work has started on a 108 MW barge-mounted power plant in the Khulna district, 8 km from the city of Khulna. The project is being developed by Khulna Power Co. Ltd., a joint venture between the Summit Group, United Enterprises and Wärtsilä NSD Power Development Inc.

Officials hope the $120 million project, at Goalpara, will be able to start supplying power to the national grid by mid-August. The power station will initially burn furnace oil, switching to gas when it becomes available.

Power from the plant will be sold to the state-run Power Development Board under a 15 year power purchase agreement. The project is one of four barge-mounted schemes planned to provide a rapid increase in generating capacity.
