Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation has been awarded the contract to replace generating unit No 2 at Uglich hydro power station in Russia.

Valued at EUR 33.2M (US$44.9M), the contract – awarded by JSC Gidro OGK – includes the replacement of the hydraulic machine and its auxiliary equipment. The output of the 9m diameter Kaplan turbine will be increased from 65MW to 70MW.

Uglich power station began operation in 1940 and was the first hydro power station of the Volga-Kama cascade.

Both parties view this contract to be a starter project with the potential for future partnership within JSC Gidro OGK’s major investment programme, with JSC Gidro OGK – a daughter company of Russia’s RAO UES – being one of the largest investors in hydro power worldwide.
