EVN to invest $2.09 billion on power links while import rise

Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) plan to spend some VND32.85 trillion ($2.09 billion) through to 2015 to develop the rural power supply system including VND2.37 trillion ($151.27 million) on transmission links for 475 communes, VND 8.5 trillion ($541.4 million) expanding the grid to provide power to 2.125 million households, and VND21 trillion ($1.34 billion) on improving national grids for 5 000 communes.

EVN aims to provide electricity to 95% of communes, 87% of villages and around 90% of rural households by the end of the year.

From next year through to 2010, EVN will supply power for a further 150 000 rural families in 325 communes and upgrade power grids for some 2 000 communes. All communes, 95% of villages and 95% of households are expected to have an electricity supply by the end of 2010.

From 2011 to 2015, EVN will expand mid-voltage and low-voltage grids in communes to supply electricity for more 950 000 families and improve power grids for 2 000 communes to provide electricity for all communes, 99.7% of villages and 98% of rural households by 2015.

In other news, EVN has announced plans to purchase more than 10 TWh at high prices this year, most likely from the Ma Lu Tang hydro-electricity plant and several other plants in China’s southern Yunnan province. EVN plans to purchase 300-400 MW of power beginning in 2006 and has already reached deals to buy almost 100 MW from China through 110 kV transmission lines in northern Lao Cai and northeastern Quang Ninh provinces.
