In the wake of an order from Italy for 90 wind turbines, the Danish wind power company Vestas has decided to establish a joint venture in Taranto, Italy.
The new company, called Italian Wind Technology (IWT), will be controlled equally by Vestas Wind Systems and the Italian company Wind Energy System Taranto (West).
IWT will operate from West’s production facilities in Taranto. It will make wind turbines in the 600-700 kW range. Activities will initially involve blade production and the assembly of turbines using components supplied from Denmark. Local content is expected to increase.
IWT will be responsible for a contract to supply 90 wind turbines, each of 600 kW to the Italian company Italian Vento Power Corp. The same company ordered 38 turbines from Vestas earlier this year.
