The AED144m (about €35m) contract was awarded by Dubai Municipality as a part of its strategic plan 2015-2021.
The mega infrastructures projects that are being awarded were based on the approved drainage and irrigation master plan to refurbish the current STPs and improve the performance of the entire existing sewerage system.
The move is aimed at addressing the expected increase of sewage in the Emirate.
Under the contract, VWST will deliver engineering, procurement and construction services for the extension of the facility.
After extension, the facility will treat 65,000m3 a day apart from the existing plant’s capacity. The project will be the first phase of an upgrade plan of Al Aweer STP.
Veolia Water Technologies executive vice-president for Africa, Middle East and Asia-Pacific Emmanuel Gayan said: "We are delighted that Veolia has been awarded the contract to support the Al Aweer Sewage Treatment Plant. It highlights how Veolia is becoming a trusted partner of Dubai Municipality ahead of Dubai Expo 2020, where sustainability is a key priority."
VWST is a subsidiary of Veolia, which supplied 96 million people with drinking water and 60 million people with wastewater services in 2014.
