The company halted operations at the refinery as it faced shortage of the main raw material, bauxite, to produce alumina.

Vedanta’s one million ton per annum refinery remained close for 10 days and has been restarted at a reduced capacity at 60%.

The company for now has secured 90,000 tons of raw material from Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation which will be supplied in two phases.

The delivery of the first lot of bauxite is anticipated to reach the refinery in the current week whereas the second lot is expected to be supplied in the month of November.

Vedanta Aluminium chief operating officer Mukesh Kumar was quoted by Business Standard as saying that the company has restarted the alumina refinery after securing 40,000 tons of bauxite supply from Bharat Aluminum Company’s Kawarrdah mines in Chhattisgarh.

"With this raw material, we hope to run the plant at a reduced capacity till December 5," Kumar said.

"But we cannot say anything about the functioning of the plant after that as the states from where we are sourcing bauxite are reluctant to supply the material to a plant outside their states.

"We, however, are trying our best to operate the plant by arranging bauxite from outside Odisha."

The refinery requires about 10,000 tons of raw material every day to operate at its full capacity.
