The 333-mile HVDC transmission line, which is being developed by Transmission Developers, will run from the Quebec border under the entire length of Lake Champlain and parts of the Hudson River to New York City.
FEIS was issued following the conclusion of environmental review, carried out by the DOE in cooperation with other federal and state agencies, and paves way for final permitting of the transmission line.
Upon completion, the project will bring up to 1,000MW of clean wind and hydropower to the New York metro area.
Transmission Developers CEO Donald Jessome said: "The CHPE transmission line will provide clean, affordable power while minimizing community and environmental impacts, and it offers a creative solution to meet the energy challenges of the future."
The project, which would help New York meet its clean energy goals, is expected to reduce energy costs for consumers and businesses by $650m annually.
The project will also increase the security of the state’s electric grid and reduce emissions by creating new infrastructure that is less susceptible to damage from natural disasters.
