Huaneng Power International has been granted approval to develop phase 1 of its Huaneng Shantou Haimen plant, a 2 GW ultra-supercritical coal-fired station at Haimen in Guangdong Province.

With approval from the National Development and Reform Commission, Huaneng can now move forward with its plans for twin 1,000 MW advanced stations together with flue gas desulphurisation facilities.

The total investment amount of the project is estimated at RMB9.21 billion ($1.16 billion), 25% of which is to be funded by Huaneng and the remainder by bank loans.
