UK business secretary John Hutton has said that the British government is ready to take tough decisions regarding the future of its energy supply, emphasizing the importance of utilizing alternative sources of energy, reported Thomson Financial.

The report quoted Mr Hutton as saying: A country of change must be prepared to embrace tomorrow’s energy sources. A truly visionary project, unparalleled anywhere in the world in scale, that alone could generate 5% of the UK’s electricity from renewable sources by 2020.

Stating that the government would fund a multi-million pound study to identify the use of tidal power for generating electricity, Mr Hutton said that the government will not deter from any critical decision regarding the establishment of a new generation of nuclear power stations.

The government is also mulling over harnessing the power of the Severn Estuary on Britain’s west coast, Mr Hutton said.
