The offshore wind farms in the UK generated 1.5 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2013, electricity equivalent to run the London Underground for 10 years.
Over 3% of the country’s total electricity demand or the equivalent requirement of 2.7 million homes was met by offshore wind farms last year, according to the Offshore Wind Operational report published by The Crown Estate.
London Array, Greater Gabbard, Sheringham Shoal and Thanet accounted for half of offshore wind production in 2013 while the remaining was contributed by 20 other farms. World’s largest wind farm, London Array, contributed 17%.
London Array, which came to production in April 2013, was the first offshore wind farm in the world to achieve an annual output of more than 2TWh in one year.
The country owns offshore wind assets worth £12bn.
The Crown Estate head of offshore wind Huub den Rooijen said that £750m investment in offshore wind industry had been announced for 2014.
Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Ed Davey saidthe UK is the number one country in the world for offshore wind, supporting green jobs and growth as well as strengthening its energy security.
"We have already attracted over £30 billion worth of investment in renewable technologies since 2010. Our ambitious electricity market reforms provide investors with the long-term certainty they need," Davey added.
