The solar power projects are expected to generate power that can fulfil the requirements of 20,000 homes while reducing production cost and lowering carbon emissions, reported The National.
FEWA director general Mohammed Saleh was quoted by the news agency as saying that the plants will be developed in partnership with the private sector.
Clean Energy Business Council technical director and CLS Energy Consultants chief executive Claudio Palmieri added: "The decision is a clear indication that the UAE Government is serious about achieving its renewable energy targets and dedicated to protecting the environment."
The power plants are being developed as part of the country’s Vision 2021 strategy, which aims to generate 24% of its total power supply from renewable sources or nuclear energy.
Construction of the first solar power plant is scheduled to commence this year.
