As reported, French energy company GDF Suez, nuclear reactor maker Areva and Total, with technical support from EDF, are included in a consortium bidding for the deal.

The consortium will compete with other bidders comprising a consortium of General Electric and Hitachi, and another of Hyundai Engineering and Construction, Korea Electric Power and Samsung C&T.

Reportedly, the contract is expected to be the largest ever energy contract awarded in the Middle East.

The incoming head of EDF, Henri Proglio said in French financial daily Les Echos that the French nuclear sector needs to undergo major restructuring in order to be more competitive internationally.

“Can we allow ourselves to lose our focus while others are pooling their strength,” he said.

The head of GDF Suez, Gerard Mestrallet also said that the French nuclear sector should be supported.
