TVA expects to begin receiving electricity from the wind farm powered by 50 Vestas 1.65MW turbines by January 2012, subject to applicable environmental requirements and securing firm transmission arrangements.
This is the second TVA-Horizon wind purchase agreement this year, the first being a purchase agreement signed in February for up to 115MW of wind power from Horizon, bringing the total wind power capacity that TVA has contracted to add to its generating system to 1,600MW.
TVA’s current renewable energy portfolio includes more than 4,300MW from hydro, wind, solar and methane sources in addition to TVA’s nuclear plants that contribute 6,900MW of carbon-free electricity to the power grid.
TVA senior vice president John Trawick said that TVA has seen remarkable growth this year in its wind power resources for the future, this continued expansion is the result of TVA’s renewed vision to be among the nation’s leading providers of clean, reliable, low-cost power.
