TVA president and CEO Tom Kilgoren said during the construction of the Bellefonte plant, TVA will integrate safety modifications from the extensive review of the lessons learned from the Fukushima nuclear plants in Japan.

"Making Bellefonte a productive asset with state-of-the-art equipment will add an additional supply of clean, base-load power to TVA’s generating mix," added Kilgore.

Upon completion, the Bellefonte facility is expected to generate 1,260MW of electricity, which is sufficient to power about 750,000 homes in the region.

Construction of the facility was 55% complete but has been halted for many years.

The project is expected to commence operations by 2020.
