Labor Inspection Committee head Mehmet Tezel said that three officials have been appointed to investigate the inspectors over possible negligence.

Labor chief inspector Emin Gümüs inspected the mine in March and reported that no shortcomings were found during the inspection, according to Turkish newspaper Hurriyet Daily News.

Tezel said, "However, there cannot be a link between the inspection and a work-related accident technically."

"An accident can happen at a mine that was evaluated positively [regarding work safety] today, and then conditions are different tomorrow."

"The important thing is that the work establishment should conduct internal regulations well and work to examine the accidents," Tezel added.

Soma district governor Bahattin Atci has ordered to cease mining operations at Atabacasi coal mine operated by Soma Coal Enterprises, reported Anadolu Agency.

Atci said that all the mines, including those operated by other firms in the region would undergo comprehensive review.

"If any deficiency or negligence is detected, the permitions for operating will be revoked and operations will stop immediately," he added.
