
Said to be the largest-of-its kind, the turbine is installed on the semi-sub floater at Onahama port. The floater will be moved to the testing area soon.
As part of the second phase of construction, assembly of 5MW downwind-type floating wind turbine will be completed and connected to the undersea cable.
Work on the 5MW turbine is underway with chains and anchors having been procured and production of high-voltage riser cable completed.
The consortium partners expect to deliver the facility from Onahama and its mooring operation in the testing area by the end of this month, and complete electric work and commissioning by mid-September with plans to start demonstration operation in mid-December.
Sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the project partners include the University of Tokyo, Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Marubeni, Japan Marine United, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal, Hitachi, Furukawa Electric, Shimizu, and Mizuho Information & Research.
The Fukushima project involves three floating wind turbines and one floating power sub-station off the coast of Fukushima.
As part of the first phase of the project, installation of a 2MW floating wind turbine, a 25MVA floating substation and undersea cable were completed. The second phase will include addition of two wind turbines.
