TRUenergy has received the approval from the government to construct a second gas-fired power plant at Tallawarra in New South Wales.

The Tallawarra station has an estimated cost of A$200m ($200m) or A$330m ($300m), and upon completion, the facility is expected to generate about 450MW of energy..

TRUenergy‘s existing 420MW combined cycle gas-fired power station on the Tallawarra site began commercial operation in January 2009.

TRUenergy operations and construction director Michael Hutchinson said that a final investment decision on the timing for a new power station development and the type of development will depend on a number of factors including a detailed study into the future electricity demand of their customers and the energy market in NSW, and policy settings such as any carbon price signal.

The company has also signed an agreement with the NSW Government for the acquisition of EnergyAustralia’s retail business, the Delta Western gentrader bundle for the Mount Piper (1400MW) and Wallerawang (1000MW) coal-fired power stations, and three power station development sites.
