As per the deal, Tocardo will demonstrate a 20-year pre-commercial array at EMEC’s grid-connected tidal test site at the Fall of Warness, off Eday, Orkney.
The firm will install the eight T2 turbines across two Tocardo systems starting next year.
EMEC managing director Neil Kermode said: "The tidal array they will deploy at EMEC will act as a stepping stone towards commercial deployments, and we’re delighted to be working with Tocardo towards that future."
The installation of the array a step ahead for Tocardo’s effort to commercialize its tidal turbine by proving and validating the technology in the volatile offshore environment in Orkney for an extended time period.
Tocardo CEO Hans van Breugel said: "The EMEC project is a breakthrough for Tocardo’s careful roll out of our technology moving from near inshore towards offshore.
"The EMEC opportunity will boost the implementation of Tocardo’s commercial roll out."
Tocardo has earlier deployed and validated its T2 turbines in the Netherlands at the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier.
The Dutch firm has already deployed five turbines in the Netherlands’ Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier.
Separately, Tocardo’s Irish subsidiary has been selected as one of 15 winners to share a $4.7m grant from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).
The grants have been awarded under SEAI’s prototype development fund.
