AREVA Inc announced it has successfully installed its safety-related TELEPERM XS digital Instrumentation and Control (I&C) system at a third nuclear reactor in the United States. The installation was complete in December 2013 at Unit 2 of Duke Energy’s Oconee Nuclear Station in South Carolina.

"Working closely with our customer, we safely completed the installation of the final unit of this digital I&C project to modernize the plant and improve reliability," said Tom Franch, senior vice president of Reactors and Services, AREVA Inc.

The project followed installation of AREVA’s digital safety-related Reactor Protection System and Engineered Safety Protection System at Oconee Unit 1 in June 2011 and at Unit 3 in 2012.

AREVA said that incorporating lessons learned from the previous two installations, it "successfully supported the installation and testing of the third system ahead of schedule with no safety issues."

In a blog post it said that the first two installations at the site ‘have been operating as designed with no issues while minimizing previous operator burdens with surveillances’

The AREVA TELEPERM XS I&C system is a fully-digital system used to monitor and control the safety of a nuclear plant. The system has been licensed in 16 countries and is installed or on order at nearly 80 nuclear reactors with 14 different designs, Areva said.

This week AREVA and China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) created a 49:51 joint-venture for technology transfer of Areva’s digital safety instrumentation and control (I&C) system to the Chinese market.
