Cygnus Instruments has announced the development of an Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge which will measure metal thickness through coatings up to 6mm thick. This technique is used in their latest gauge which has been certified intrinsically safe with a higher T rating to EEx ia IIC T6. Accurate thickness measurements can be taken without the need for a hot work permit or for shutting down the plant.

Previous ultrasound technology meant that Intrinsically Safe gauges were not feasible because removing coatings requires either grinding or chipping, both of which will cause sparks.

The gauge has a heavy-duty case with a bright LED display which can be viewed in all light conditions. It can be used to monitor corrosion levels quickly and easily, and from one side only, in pipelines, tanks, process systems, gas tanks, or wherever metal wastage is of concern to the operator.

The added benefit of measuring through coatings is that protective membranes are fitted to the face of the probe to eliminate damage from rough or corroded surfaces. The membrane is treated like a coating and completely ignored.

The gauge is designed for ease-of-use and is supplied as a complete kit including probe, couplant and spare parts. It comes in its own carry case with a two-year warranty.
