The construction of the 20MW (AC) / 24.8MW (DC) solar photovoltaic power plant, began in October 2011 and will enter commercial service in the third quarter of 2012.
The project employs nearly 88,000 poly-crystalline solar modules provided by Trina Solar.
The value of the transaction was not disclosed though it marks the first project sale deal between Southern Company and SunEdison where the electricity generated by the plant will be delivered to Nevada Power Company, a NV Energy unit, for 25 years.
SunEdison will oversee the ongoing operations and maintenance of the facility built on a 154-acre site in North Las Vegas in Clark County, Nevada.
MEMC Electronic Materials CEO Ahmad Chatila said, "The planning, construction and acquisition of the Apex Project is consistent with this commitment and occurred thanks to support from multiple sources, including NV Energy, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, United States Senator Harry Reid and the City of North Las Vegas."
Southern Company and Turner Renewable Energy formed an alliance in January 2010 to focus on developing and investing in large-scale solar photovoltaic projects in the Southwest, where solar resources are most in demand.
