Improvements to the water distribution within the city are aimed at ensuring continuous supply of drinking water to 1.6 million inhabitants. The duration of the project is for 26 years and is claimed to be the largest water services contract won by the company in India.
Coimbatore, located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, is considered to be one of the largest textiles and industrial hubs in the region.
As part of the contract, Suez will provide optimisation, rehabilitation and operation of the entire water distribution system including reservoirs, water network, house connections, water meters, and valves. The system will cover an area more than 100 km2 with 150,000 connections and a distribution network of 1,200 km.
Suez Group Deputy CEO and charge of International segment Marie-Ange Debon said: “Population and urban growth in India, linked with economic development, has resulted in citizens’ new expectations for quality services.
“Our longstanding experience in supplying water to cities such as Algiers, Casablanca and Chongqing, and more recently to Indian cities, enables us to guarantee continuous access to quality drinking water to the population of Coimbatore.”
Last year in December, Carcassonne Agglo urban had selected Suez to provide water and wastewater treatment services for some of its municipalities located in the west of the region under a public service delegation contract.
As part of the contract, Suez will protect the water as a resource and secure supply. It will improve existing infrastructure to improve efficiency and secure the resources through optimum production capacity.
