Hyundai Engineering & Construction selected Degrémont to design, build and operate a desalination plant located at the new Mirfa Independent Water and Power Project (Mirfa IWPP) in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority is implementing the Mirfa IWPP project, which is situated 160km west of Abu Dhabi.
The €146m contract includes €117m for the design and construction of a reverse osmosis (RO) seawater desalination plant, with 140,000m³ of daily capacity.
Suez said the plant will be equipped with SeaDaf filtration technology to pre-treat the water from the Arabian Gulf, which is turbid and rich in algae.
Upon completion of the construction, Degrémont will operate and maintain the RO plant for seven years for €29m.
The Mirfa IWPP will meet the region’s demand for drinking water and electricity by supplying 240,000 m3/day of drinking water and 1,600MW of energy.
Oman water authority Haya Water has awarded the second contract to Degrémont for designing and operating a wastewater treatment plant in Al-Amerat.
Degrémont will carry out the project in co-ordination with Oman-based civil engineering firm Al-Ansari Trading Entreprise.
The contract has a two-year term for the operation and maintenance of the plant, which will treat 18,000 m3/day of wastewater.
