Hydrocarbons were discovered with the drilling of License 228 in the Barents Sea. The results from the well reportedly show that the reservoir contains both oil and gas. StatoilHydro said that the discovery was the fourth find on licenses operated by it on the Norwegian Continental Shelf in 2008.
StatoilHydro noted that this is the first well in Production License 228, which was awarded to it in the Barents Sea licensing round of 1997. The well was drilled to a total depth of 2,825m below sea level. The company said that the well will be permanently plugged and abandoned.
Tim Dodson, head of exploration on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, said: The finds confirm our expectations that additional reserves can be found in this area, and we plan to drill another well in this license in 2008.
