Situated in County Limerick, Ireland, the 34MW wind project will feature a total of 16 turbines and is estimated to generate enough electricity to power almost 17,000 homes.
Athea Wind Farm project manager Seamus Lynch said the first turbine installation marks a significant milestone for the project.
"As we move into a critical and exciting phase of the project, we have been working closely with the local council and wildlife groups to ensure that everything is in place for us to erect the turbines with the minimum disruption to the surrounding communities and natural habitats," added Lynch.
The installation of turbines is scheduled for completion by November 2013, and during this period, the project will maintain more than 200 hundred jobs.
Following the completion, the project along with SSE’s existing Tournafulla, Dromada and Rathcahill wind farms, will provide the county with a combined generation capacity of in excess of 100MW.
