Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said that Sri Lanka's Lakvijaya coal power plant in Norochcholai will be shut down for 40 days for the annual maintenance and other repair work.

The power plant will be shut down on 21 August and it is planned to be restarted on 1 October, reported Colombo Page.

CEB said this would be the first free annual maintenance carried out by the Chinese builder of the plant China National Machinery Import and Export.

The plant has broken down more than 20 times, since commencing operations in 2011.

China National Machinery Import and Export blamed Sri Lanka’s failure to conduct annual maintenance for the breakdowns.

The second phase of the plant is to commence operations in October and the generation is to be connected to the main grid in December.
