Plant Cleveland is the third generating facility, owned and operated by Southern Power. The power plant will expand the firm’s natural gas portfolio.
The plant comprises of four Siemens F Class gas turbine units that occupy a part of a 275-acre site near Kings Mountain in the state.
Power generated at the station will be sold to electricity suppliers North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation and North Carolina Municipal Power Agency Number 1.
The generating facility represents an investment of about $330m in the community and created about 300 jobs during the construction period. Eight persons have been employed to operate the plant.
Southern Power president and CEO Oscar C Harper stated, "We are excited about growing Southern Power’s presence in North Carolina to provide clean, safe, reliable and affordable electricity to customers while positively impacting the local economy."
The company had bought the 925MW Plant Rowan gas facility in 2006. In October 2012, it announced with Turner Renewable Energy the acquisition of the 2.5MW Granville Solar Facility.
