Four projects mooted for 1 GW of power

A forum to develop four offshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 1 GW is to be set up by South Korean companies and lawmakers. The forum will comprise eight companies, including Hyundai Heavy Industries, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, and Korea Southern Power. Both the opposition and governing party politicians will lend their support.

The forum is aiming to construct wind farms off Busan, Jeju, Incheon International Airport and an as yet undecided site along the south coast at a cost of 3 trillion won ($2.92 billion), according to reports from the country, and possibly in the Kaema plateau in North Korea.

South Korea already has modest wind power plants on Jeju Island, Daegwallyeong, and in Yeongdeok.
