Shell has announced that it launched the world’s first large scale commercial solar electrification project which is intended to bring power to 50 000 homes in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province.

Shell Solar plans to install 6000 home systems within the next 6 months, and 50 000 within the next 3 years. The project could supply 2.5 MWe to regions currently outside the reach of the power grid. This would represent about 2 per cent of the current global solar market.
