Slovenske Elektrarne (HSE), Slovenia’s state –owned power utility has begun construction on a 42.5 MW hydroelectric plant.

The Blanca project will be the second of five plants proposed for the Sava river and the US$70.3M plant is due to begin operations in 2009. The first, Bostanj, was begun in 2003 and is due to start operations next May while the third, Krsko, is scheduled to begin in 2006.

When completed in 2018 the five plants will produce 6% of the country’s installed capacity and more than a fifth of its installed hydro generation.
