Global technology powerhouse Siemens has won an order to supply key power generation equipment for the Sabiya Extension 3 combined cycle power plant in Kuwait.
The Kuwait Ministry of Electricity and Water, the owner of the plant, had awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract of Sabiya plant to Alghanim International.
A long-term service agreement with Alghanim has also been included, to ensure availability, reliability and performance of the main components. The agreement covers the power train components, including Power Diagnostics and Remote Monitoring.
The power train, which will provide an electrical capacity of 900 MW, will comprise two gas turbines, two hydrogen-cooled generators, steam turbine and a steam turbine generator.
Siemens will also deliver the control system and 26 bays of gas-insulated switchgear, and associated control and protection systems for the power plant, which will provide power to the newly developing areas in northern Kuwait.
Being built on the existing site of the Sabiya power plant on the Bay of Kuwait, the 900 MW multi-shaft combined cycle Sabiya Extension 3 can also be operated with fuel oil as a back-up fuel. Alghanim will construct the entire plant, establish grid connection, and operate and maintain it.
The plant is expected to commence simple cycle operation in 2019, and the combined cycle operation is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2020.
Siemens Power and Gas Middle East & North Africa Region sales head Jean Claude Nasr said: “This is the fourth power plant order that Siemens has secured in Kuwait in only four years, following the orders for Sabiya Extensions 1 and 2 and Az Zour South.”
