The Netherlands-based multinational oil and gas company Royal Dutch Shell has announced Ben van Beurden to be the next CEO of the company, effective from 1 January 2014.

Ben will succeed Peter Voser who has worked with the company for 29 years.

Ben holds a master’s degree in chemical engineering from Delft University of Technology and joined the company in 1983.

His experience in the company spans both upstream and downstream activities and worked in numerous operational and commercial roles.

In January 2013, Ben was appointed downstream director and a member of Shell’s Executive Committee.

Royal Dutch Shell chairman Jorma Ollila said Ben has deep knowledge of the industry and proven executive experience across a range of Shell businesses.

"Ben will continue to drive and further develop the strategic agenda that we have set out, to generate competitive returns for our shareholders," Ollila added.

"Van Beurden’s selection came after a comprehensive assessment and review of internal and external candidates led by the Board Nomination and Succession Committee."
