With the first phase completed and operational, the photovoltaic solar energy project can now produce enough electricity to power 56,000 homes.

Pacific Gas & Electric purchased power from the solar plant under a 20-year agreement.

Sempra U.S. Gas & Power president and chief executive officer Jeffrey Martin stated that the company will now focus on completing the remaining 4,000-acre complex.

"This accomplishment puts us solidly on track to own and operate more than 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy capacity by the end of this year," Martin said.

Sempra began development of the project in June 2011 and once further phases planned at the complex are completed, it can generate nearly 700MW of renewable energy.
